Back on Earth, was the name of a place some believed that some sinners would wind up. Not good enough for Heaven, not sinful enough for Hellfire and damnation. It wasn't a final resting place, more like a rest stop, where you purge your soul of those sins and move on. Not necessarily ideal if the goal was to get to Heaven, but not like you were lost forever with no hope.
