✨ XIMILIA TOWN HALL MEETING ✨ ( video/audio/action )

[ some morning in the middle of the week, during their return to the station, an invitation will be taped on the door of every orber. though the calligraphy would suggest this must have been typed on a computer and printer, each invitation is actually very carefully hand-written and reads as follows: ]

[ the idea is for everyone to meet in the mess hall at the intended time, but if some choose not to attend, the meeting can still be accessed by the earpieces, allowing all orbers to watch or listen in and contribute however they wish, no matter where they are.

however, for those who do decide to attend, the mess hall features a full display of bagels and donuts, along with plenty of fresh coffee, all to help everyone wake up and feel refreshed for the meeting that's about to take place.

a makeshift little stage, arranged by stacking together a few metal boxes is at the center of the room, atop of it being the one and only rita farr herself, with a bright optimistic smile. when she sees enough people present and settled, she speaks up, loud and clear: ]

Hello, everyone! Welcome to our first Annual β€” or monthly, or however we decide to do it β€” Town Hall meeting! Thank you all for coming and please enjoy the food to your heart's content. For those who don't know me, I'm Rita Farr. Nowβ€” though my name does appear on the invitation, this is hardly about me. This is about all of us.

After our ... last mission, it became quite clear that our group could use a bit of improvement with how we approach our next missions moving forward. And I thought the best way to plan for that is to allow all of us an opportunity to discuss how we all feel about what we've done well and what we could do better. After all, everyone deserves a say in this, right?

[ she points behind her where a giant board is on display on an easel, once again, hand-written with careful and precise calligraphy in giant letters: ]

Here, I've written some sample questions we can all try to offer answers to, but the floor will also be open for any other questions and suggestions that anyone might have. Remember, there are no wrong answers! We're all here for an open forum discussion. But before that!

[ she reaches over to the board, pulling it off to reveal another one behind it. this one reads as follows: ]

Please consider the "Keys to Success", not only on our missions, but as we talk together in this room right now. We'll go ahead and take turns either stepping up here on the stage or speaking out from wherever you are. There are no microphones but the earpieces should get your voices out to everyone. Now, who would like to start?

( this post is open to all! the idea is that everyone is taking turns in each thread to speak out to the entire group (whether from within the room or from elsewhere), but thread-jacking and hopping around for discussion is the key here! feel free to run wild with ic suggestions or questions regarding mission layouts or planning or whatever floats your boat (ic complaining/protest is always an option too). though rita is organizing it, it's open to whatever people are inclined to discuss. )

I'm familiar with the kind of power that can override one's free will, and how it can not just compel service, but extract information.

[Which is generally more effective than torture, to Sabriel's academic understanding, based on the annotations in the Book of the Dead.]

And while I was there on Kilnan, and it is clear that mental infiltration is a hole in the Ximilia's security... Ignorance can be just as dangerous.

At the very least, knowing who the healers are in case someone is badly injured is important.

That sounds smart, and safer. That can't be hacked as far as I know.

We could keep it an an open document for people to add information about themselves as they see fit, since new orbers arrive every now and then.

( billy still feels like right shit but that's gonna be par for the course, ain't it? he's used enough doses of the temporary v that he's already signed his death warrant and now all he can do is wait it out and let it happen.

but, he knows if he locks himself in his fucking room, people are gonna get suspicious and shit so he goes to this town hall meeting and finds an open seat and drops in it.

he stretches his legs out, a manspreader at his worst, and ignores everyone that tries to step past him or sit next to him. he's in that kind of mood and sitting around with everyone here, listening to gripes and bitches isn't gonna make it better.

but he's here to listen, to at least keep up with this place so he thinks that wins him some brownie points. )

The kinds of rescues and retrievals I knew... They're not like this. [Mu children are nowhere near as capricious or violent as the orbs... the cities though? the security? that could be argued.]

Magic...the fluctuating levels of technology...the alien species... These are things I have no experience with.

Because leaving people to suffer or die, seems excessively cruel?

[Or bleeding hearts.

Another weakness that seems to run through enough of the orbers to make it count.]

But are we really saviors, or are we merely prolonging the pain on the worlds that we enter. Or bring a different kind of death with us.

[Ed is taller, having had to figure altering his clothes since he got back, that they could fit him again. He's still kind of reeling from everything he just went through back home. From the last mission and all. But he attends the meeting, once he finds the note about it. Figuring at the least, he should show up, at least to listen and agree with others, if not to give his own opinion as well. He's aware others here are older, have more experience, for all that a lot of the time he himself gets underestimated. For all that he himself can be a bit cocky sometimes.]

For the specialized responsibilities, I guess that depends on how open we all are. Some of us might not want everyone knowing our abilities or such if there's some sort of stigma against it back home? I dunno. But if something needs fixing or to be made, I've helped out with my alchemy before. That is - basically, I can take something and use the base materials to make something else. Like metal, I can transmute it into cutlery, a weapon or whatever. Just as an example. Just so long as I know what something is made of. And I'm not trying to make more of something than I have to work with initially. I've helped Newt, but he's better with the technology side of things, given he's from way after what I last recall back home in the 1910s.

[So he is still learning the more advanced technology to some extent. In comparison to others that are far more used to it. To working with it. But Ed does want to help as best he can at least. And he has never been shy about his alchemy, only cautious about using it in some of the missions if people there might not react so well to it.]

The orbs.....I know they're the priority. But I'm not willing to kill to get them. And I'd want to try help out where we can while there, at least. I'm not sure how well staying behind like last mission might work, that isn't usually an option for us to wait and get to try help out for so long. And I think a lot of it will depend on the situation, the people there, the locals. They're the ones, like Sabriel said, that will have to live with the aftermath of whatever happens with us taking the orb. Trying to help them figure alternatives? Instead of the orb which we are supposed to take? I dunno. We've all seen the consequences of the orb's presence at these places. And it is why we are sent out. To get them and bring them back to the station. I'll get as many as I have to, if it means I can fix things back home.

[To get Al his body back. Ed has to remind himself of that. Even if there's still some lines he won't cross to do it. That is the end goal, for him. What he wants to figure fixing with his regret.

Otherwise, he's probably quiet, listening to others and their opinions, while downing some of the offered food and drink in the process. And probably eating more than one might expect from him. Given he is eating for Al too.]

[ Because now he just feels bad, in case Peter does want to talk for his own sake. Finn's only projected a couple of feelings at Blue and vague-talked about it with McCoy, though. It certainly isn't Peter that Finn keeps his mouth shut for. He just-... Not right now. Not yet. Maybe never. ]

It's not very hard, is it. To notice someone's sudden lack of presence in a place like this. [ He gets it. He's gone through it himself. And sometimes, he still hurts from it. So there's a tone of empathy in his voice when he speaks to it. ]

... I mean, we should probably have levels. Someone who is assessed to be a normal joe who can be reasoned with? Probably could just use a talking to, maybe even some kind of middle ground. Someone who uses the orb to turn a bunch of people into sickly monsters? Probably deserves to be threatened to release their bargain.

[He shrugs.]

Sometimes people will have to get hurt or worse in a fight that already involves stuff like tyranny or people in big danger.

[Newt glances over, a little embarrassed at having to point any of that out in the first place β€” everyone knows he's hardly proud of how things went months ago. But he's appreciative, hand moving over Blue's and squeezing.]

Heh, well. I'll try not to shriek anyway, for the sake of not losing my voice.

[Sighing softly, he looks down.]

The orb was the reason there was even a war in the first place, right?

It put a bandaid on a big giant cut. People still died, and the people we got to know lost their ticket to their afterlife... The orb being used at all on that planet is what ruined that for them, in the end.

[ Hmmmmm. Finn shrugs. ] My power would have sustained me. It did sustain me. I didn't actually need to eat. But I... still worried people. [ Which is The Problem with him.

Anyway, he sighs and scratches at the back of his neck. ]

It's just different with me. I had the power to stop the building and I couldn't do it. And yeah, we had a lead in Taeum, but we should have told others first. I know hindsight is better but-... It's a lot of mistakes, don't you think? In a row? All the time?

[ And he doesn't want to flat-out say it, but having this kind of power and responsibility, he feels like he has a quota on mistakes before everyone he knows dies. His mistakes in the past have killed many good people but there's always room to grow... ]

[ Finn's one of those bleeding hearts. Willing to die for any cause that seems good enough. And even though he'd like to think that war has hardened him enough to know what's worth dying for and what isn't, that's not the case. He knows himself, knows he'd always give too much, and is entirely unwilling to become cold enough to change that.

Unwilling or not, becoming colder is probably happening regardless. ]

Hmm? [ The question is so unexpected that it takes him a second. Because he wasn't thinking about how good or bad or gullible he is, no. Just thinking about the support that Kirigan so freely offers and trying to think about anything else so he doesn't get emotional in the back of a crowded room about it.

But. Right. Sweets. ]

It feels kind of good to smile again, even for a second. ]

It's good to meet you, too. But, uh... I'm one of the crazy ones that usually get up way earlier than this.

If you had the power to stop that tower from falling, it wouldn't have fallen. [ There's nothing shaming in the tone there, nothing implying that he wasn't good enough or strong enough. Simply stating something that feels like a fact to him. ] You did, however, buy time for many of the people inside, ensured that Peter and Blue could make it to a safer place when they may not have otherwise, and despite your own injuries, are standing here now, yourself, thanks to them. All choices and actions made within a few seconds' notice.

In Taeum, would the opinions of others really have dissuaded you from following your lead? Or would it have just turned into the same things that happened during the last mission? Incessant arguing that ultimately didn't change anything - those who wished to recover Viveca's body still did as much because we were on a timer and had to act. That didn't exactly end without some bullshit, either, but ultimately that didn't turn out as badly as it could have.

It's not different with you. None of us would be here in the first place if we'd never made mistakes. And far be it from me to say it, [ Because, look, he's 100% self-aware of his own hypocrisy about being loud and butting heads with others here. ] but anybody arguing so strongly could do well to look in the mirror, as if they've never fucked something up before!

Hindsight is always better. Sometimes I told you so is a perfectly valid way for someone to respond to someone else's blunder. But in the end the things you change moving forward from that hindsight shouldn't solely rely on others. And if it always does, maybe you could do to have more people around who have more faith in you. But in order for people to put their faith in you, you need to put a little more into yourself.

I'm curious to know. On Badrock, did your power sustain you? Completely? Because if it just slowed the process of starvation, then I can understand why others would be worried if you weren't eating at all.

[ Finn nods throughout most of this, because the Doctor is totally right. And so long as it's not a rule that everyone must follow all the time, Finn's okay with it. And he's also right in the comparison between the troubles of Gyeongje vs E-23b.

Live and learn, Finn supposes.

It's the last part that makes him wilt, though. Even though he hadn't really been disagreeing with the Doctor, he... had forgotten about that. Their decision may have cost a civilization, a planet, a galaxy- But his only reaction is a slump against the door frame and looking away for but a moment. Then he looks back and appears as steady as he's been all day. Which isn't a lot. ]
