Oh man, we have new blood again? Welcome aboard!
I've been saving these stickers for the occasion.
[He sends a snapshot of the stickers in question:]

If you're not a newbie and you really want one, I barter in any of the following: snacks, shiny rocks, manga, monster movies, cool figurines, cigarettes, conversations about tattoos, spaghetti or any type of noodle, cute dimples, cheek kisses, compliments about my boots, neat pictures of any manner of phyla, a tall can of pringles, pens with blue or red ink, caffeine patches, 80's or 90's band shirts, things that hover that shouldn't, fancy scissors, dinosaur stickers, or coffee.
Just come on down to the lab and get your very special prize!
If I'm bumping into tables and jumping six feet in the air because you so much as sneezed in my direction, it's because I'm temporarily blind and literally can't see my own hand in front of my face.
Ciao!

[That is Ed's priority. Not some silly shirt or sticker or whatever. Newt himself is more important and Ed doesn't want him hurting himself in the lab while he is having trouble seeing or something.]
voice;
[He pops the 'p' on that, sounding none too concerned.]
Dude, don't even sweat it. I'm getting used to these weird episodes! I bet if I practice enough, I could even keep doing my usual around the lab without my vision. Maybe I'll start by working without my glasses...
[A+ IDEAS.
Really, he hates the dark — but what can you do? It is what it is.]
voice;
[Idiot prodigies gotta look out for each other. Or something. Ed isn't about to let Newt hurt himself by trying to keep going through this. Even if the other tries to reassure him.]
voice;
Hey, c'mon! You don't need to...!
[Ugh, too late. Little dude's on the move.
He stands with his arms folded petulantly in the middle of the lab, blind as a bat.]
voice;
[Ed tells him, the noise of his boots on the floor of the station likely slightly audible at least as he makes his way to the lab. Probably from the kitchens, knowing him and his appetite. He is quick at least, can't have been too far, that he approaches the other, a hand to his shoulder. Even if temporary, the loss of senses still unnerves Ed. The reminder of some of what Al has been dealing with for years with his situation with the armor.]
You okay? How long does this usually last, exactly?
voice;
I'm cool! I'm good. I just — yanno, I ride it out. Sometimes listen to some music, or whatever... The only thing that really sucks is, I don't always know how long it'll last. Most of the time, it's just a few hours.
no subject
Sorry. Didn't mean to startle you. Hm. So it's random? How long it lasts then. And when it happens. Anything you want me to keep going for you here while you wait it out for now?
[He isn't sure what exactly Newt had been working on if anything in the lab. If it might be anything more time sensitive or something that can't wait while he has no vision at the moment. He glances in front of Newt at the table to check.]
no subject
[He very much was, it as very obvious.]
It's super random, though, yeah. I never know when, which really sucks, especially when you're in the shower. [Truly a nightmare! Imagine the slipping that almost happens!] I wasn't doing too much, really; just compiling some bestiary notes for the last mission...
Dude, the wildlife there was so cool.
no subject
[Look. He won't say anything. Not if Newt isn't. Whatever. He's mostly just relieved Newt is okay. Or, well. As okay as he could be, considering the potential danger depending on the timing of this sort of thing happening at random. Ed gives a shrug, glancing to the others notes briefly.]
The volcano and all, right? I missed out. But making notes about the missions isn't a bad idea. I guess you are more the expert in terms of the creatures?
no subject
[He rubs the back of his head, and grins (...toward the wall, but you get who he was trying to aim for, Eddyboy!).]
I've got as many notes as I could, yeah! From Badrock to the funky volcano world, and everything else before and after and in-between! There's so much to learn on every planet we visit, you know?
no subject
[Because, beyond the orbs themselves helping given his regret is what happened to Al, to be able to fix things for him in getting his original body back. Ed otherwise has yet to figure any other option here or on the missions yet. So he has not figured adding all that much to his journal during his time here.]
no subject
You never really did say how that worked. [A pause.] I mean! If that's not like... a super fucking rude thing to ask about. I have a billion questions, but I imagine it's not sunshine and rainbows to discuss your brother's current body crisis.
no subject
[He assumes Newt is asking how Ed did it. In sealing Al's soul to the armor. Which is. Kinda tricky to try explain to someone that doesn't know about alchemy. And not the most pleasant but he doesn't mind talking about it. He has been more open about things here. It's no secret or anything.]
How it worked? I was desperate. My leg had been taken in the attempt to bring mom back. Al was gone. Taken entirely. I didn't really think on it too much. I just said I'd pay whatever it took to get him back. Offered my arm, my other leg, my heart. whatever it was that it took in exchange. I got his soul and bound that to a suit of armor. The blood seal is at the top of the back just under the helm. If that is damaged, it negates his binding to the armor. That would kill him. For all that some would say it is great, not needing to sleep or feel pain or whatever. It's not a long term solution. There's a time limit. His soul is being pulled back to where his body is at the Gate. That's why I have to hurry....
no subject
Sounds like a lot that I wouldn't get without a lot of lessons.
But I kinda get it. I mean, I can see the logic from your world... Hearing that souls are a confirmed thing in so many worlds is kind of nice, though. In a scary 'holy shit, we need to be careful with our souls' kind of way. Maybe this 'Gate' is kind of like our Drift. Like, pilots always talk about being in the Drift, even after they die.
Makes me wonder if it's somewhere we all go.
But — I'm sure you'll make it. You've got time here, and you'll get your regret fixed up, no sweat.
no subject
[Or. Well. Newt is a fellow nerd so he probably doesn't necessarily consider this as a chore like homework. Ed spends a lot of his time researching as well. So it probably seems more fun and exciting than others might consider. He hopes.]
The Gate is...like this part of us, inside all of us, that gives us the potential for alchemy. That knowledge. Al is trapped in his, in ours. Or, his body is. Because when we tried to bring her back, we mixed our blood. As payment. Alongside the other ingredients of a human body. I can't speak for this Drift, except you said it was like it links people? I guess that is kind of similar. At least in that basic sort of sense. Al and I, our Gates are connected.
But -- yeah. I hope so.
no subject
You think any of us have Gates? People not from your world, I mean.
no subject
[Doesn't mean others might not be able to understand the theory. But actually making use of that to perform a transmutation.]
no subject
It just kind of reminds me of the Drift. This idea of Gates?
We use technology to use the Drift, not alchemy, but it can really feel like you're passing through one. Into other people's memories, their thoughts and feelings, all of that. I know scientifically they're crazy different, but I think I can at least get how something like that could exist.

[Probably more likely what he needs is Winry. Winry would likely be happy to help rebuild futuristic technology. She would be all over something like that. Would probably live in the lab if she were here aboard the Ximilia.]
I'd say Winry'd help you and be all over something like a half busted machine from the fugure if she were here.

[He rubs the back of his head, using the other hand to steady himself on the counter (and not, like, fall over running into something).]
I just... you know.
I guess I have some hang-ups about drifting still.
[After all, the last time he drifted, it was with the precursors.]
no subject
[He's in no rush to be keen on experiencing that again. For all that he is desperate and will do it however many times it takes to drag Al's body back. It had taken so much from him. From all of them. His leg, his arm. Al's whole body. Izumi's insides. Roy's sight. But at least Ed could still trust his own mind. His thoughts. Newt had been unable to for a while there, given his attempt to Drift with those precursors. It's understandable he might be kinda unsure and not keen on fixing the thing given that.]
