I know there's been some debate about the identity of the former crewmate. Chief of Staff Emerton Haughtford is the former Ximilia crew member. I believe this is important information to give us context for what we're dealing with here, but that doesn't mean any of us should disrespect Viveca's wishes and attempt to tell Emerton about his past. Without his memory, it'll probably do both him and our mission more harm than good.

Particularly since he... doesn't seem to be involved at all with any of the events that have unfolded, at present or in the past. He's not part of Zandr's group, and he wasn't involved in the research that led to the current issues with ghost matter, or the decision made to release it.

I'm not sure we can confirm any of that yet since we don't know how his regret might have reshaped the world, but either way, I trust Viveca on this.

Yes. And no way of knowing without restoring his memories, since he didn't share his regret with Viveca or Degar.

It might not even be relevant. We haven't had an insider on any of our other missions and we've still managed to uncover the truth and get the orb. We'll be alright, Sabriel.

True. I mean, we ended up tripping over ourselves a bit when we went to Viveca and Degar's worlds because we were worried about helping their friends, and addressing their world's problems.

So maybe we should just... set the knowledge aside, and treat Emerton as we would if we didn't know.

[He smiles a little at the response, and a surge of affection rises in him. He knows how important information is to Sabriel and how she always works hard to learn whatever she can to better their missions, but it's nice to hear her set it aside for Emerton's sake.]

That's what I think too. We always make it work in the end, don't we? And if we need his help I'm sure we can still find a way to earn it.

What was your impression of the man?

（ his trust in viveca is absolute — but there is also no telling how the resolution of the man's regret may have changed the trajectory of his life. emerton may still hold to the same principles and values and in every way important have the same quality of character, but itachi at least would feel better for knowing that wei wuxian's present insights mirrored those in her past. ）

Kind, and without time for bullshit pandering. He was polite enough, but it was clear he had no desire to receive praise or accommodation for his work. I think the only reason he even attends the fundraisers is because he knows their importance. He isn't a man who cares for flattery.

It's obvious the cause matters to him though. He cares about what he's doing, and not because it makes him look good.

I'm beginning to wonder if Viveca has a type.

I know, I know. To your point, he did seem to live up to Viveca's description. I can't say I got to know him very well in the little time we spent together, but he did strike me as a man who values forthrightness and honesty.

Do you feel anyone might be tempted to refuse to obey Viveca's request?

No one specific has insinuated it, but I don't trust the crew as a whole not to act on what they think will mean the fastest method of obtaining the orb if they think it'll benefit our search.

I don't think it will though. I don't think he'd believe us.

I'm keeping an ear out for anyone talking about trying it.

Thank you for the intel. It's something to keep tabs on if nothing else, and it might say something about his character.

He was the commander of the last Ximilia crew. From what Viveca shared, he held everyone's respect, including hers. She said he was a good man.

[He isn't entirely sure why he privates this, but there's something about sharing it that feels like revealing something too personal to Viveca. It wasn't information shared for a mission after all, it was only Viveca speaking warmly of her old crew in a private conversation.]

I haven't had the chance to meet him directly, but he generally seems to be held in higher regard than the other leaders around here.

Hopefully we're able to keep him from getting drawn in.

It'd be nice if we could tell Viveca that he's doing well after this.

I hope so too. And if it becomes necessary to draw him in, I hope it can be done without revealing the past to him. He doesn't seem like the kind of man who needs a personal stake in a matter to be motivated to help.

No need to pull him back into something that's been settled, or digging into old questions.

[Vash certainly feels some sort of way about the idea of the man simply not remembering an important part of his past, given what happened with the man called Livio shortly before his arrival here. He doesn't want to risk causing the man harm, but he still finds himself faintly troubled.]

It isn't a dumb question at all. I'm not sure how it all works exactly, but it appears that once people leave the Ximilia, they don't retain their memories of their experiences there. You'll have to ask Viveca and Degar for more specifics as I'm not entirely sure of how that works. [McCoy did remember after all, but there are others who haven't so.]

I don't know how it works when the orbs are all collected but if Emerton is anything to go by, I suspect it might mean memories of the Ximilia are forfeit when we return to our worlds.

So, then...it will be truly as if our regret never happened, at least for us.

[It's a strange thought. He has lived with his regret nearly as long as he has been alive to begin with -- it's hard to imagine who he would even be now, if the Fall had never happened. Some part of him feels a twinge of (possibly irrational) guilt at the notion of forgetting his grief over Rem, but it's nothing placed next to saving her life.]

I didn't realize the orbs had all been united before. Do you know what happened to them?

I've never asked. It may have been information given to the crew before my time, or it's possible it's remained private. [He says "private" rather than "secret" because whatever went wrong, he's sure it gets personal for Viveca and Degar fast. If it were important to know, he trusts that they would share, and maybe they will with time. Or maybe he'll ask Viveca one day.]

That makes sense. There must be a reason it hasn't come up, too, it's just...I'm sure none of us would want our own homes to be in danger without our knowledge when we leave here. If there's a way to prevent a repeat, I'd like to help.
