[let's talk about all that orb barrier stuff] - text (un: major.yzak.jule)
Before the location of our last mission is pinpointed, maybe we should have a discussion about what Viveca mentioned regarding the barrier holding up.
Namely, alternatives to every one of us giving up our reason for coming here. She did say to start thinking about it.
The commander's powers notwithstanding, plenty of us on this team undoubtedly possess abilities that could be offered in support. And there are plenty of people beyond us on this station who are aware of our mission and the gravity of what we're dealing with.
We've always been pretty good at coming up with solutions and contingency plans.

Reforming the Japanese justice system ought to be a piece of cake compared to some of the things we've gone through here.
[...]
I suppose things will be significantly different in your case... You'll have a whole new future available to you.
[Yeah we're back on that subject, sorry Yzak.]

[ Even when speaking of it from a strictly general angle, it doesn't fail to trigger that feeling of an icy blade being stuck into his heart. No matter how hard Yzak tries to ignore it to answer the question. ]
I mean, I don't think anything too significant will be changed in the present that awaits me when I return.
What happened ... happened not long before the second war ended. The only difference is that weapon will have missed its mark entirely. We'll still know what would have happened and what their aim was, still would have taken the same action against it and the Earth Forces to ensure it wouldn't fire again. We would have been just as pissed off about it!
Everything else was already in motion ... to the point where I don't think the changes I'm here to make will affect it.
The biggest difference will be a loss of life narrowly avoided instead of something else we had to deal with in the aftermath of a ceasefire.

[He pauses ponderously a moment, trying to think back on all the things Yzak has told him about the situation over there in the ol' Cosmic Era.]
...I'll admit, I often feel as if I still don't have a completely clear picture of what's going on in your world. All those forces at play, and at a scale far bigger than anything my world has experienced. But... If you're viewing things in a broad sense like that. It's probably easy to forget that large number represents thousands of living, breathing individuals. That's thousands of futures that would have otherwise been cut short, suddenly able to go on living. All of them with the potential to make a difference in the world, big or small.
[He laughs somewhat sheepishly.]
It sort of makes my head spin a bit to think about it, to be honest. But my point is... It might make a more significant difference than you think. Even if it's not an immediately obvious or drastic change.

But even through that selfishness is the truth that Ryunosuke speaks, solid and powerful and bright against those dark thoughts. Something that Yzak himself can never deny no matter how much of a storm stays raging in his heart. ]
Mmh, you're right about that much.
... a couple of people on my team. They had family, friends, living on those colonies. And even despite what had happened, they were still ready to fight. To put aside their grieving to ensure it didn't happen to anybody else. I was lucky, they it wasn't my own hometown that was hit.
But the scope of that, even looking at those couple of firsthand cases I've seen, is obvious and drastic enough.

[Drastic changes, different futures... And being worlds apart from the only other people in existence who will also understand how much they had to fight for those changes. Not to mention what was sacrificed...
They started out this conversation both incredibly irritated and distressed about the orb containment situation, and that essentially still stands... But Ryunosuke feels oddly hollow and wistful now, for other reasons, which prompts a rather out of the blue suggestion:]
Hey... I'm feeling sort of peckish. Do you want to go get something from the mess hall together? Then we can take it back to either one of our cabins and chat a bit more without relying on the ear pieces.
