Alright, just like this…? [Oh yeah, that’s working. Okay, weird. Those who know him might recognize Wei Wuxian’s voice but for those who don’t, he doesn’t introduce himself.]

I’ve got some important information to share. Or could be important. [Hell if he knows what’s relevant and what isn’t, but Gwen seems to know more about how these things work so he’s going off of that.]

Me and Gwen were arrested and imprisoned in Taeum. We were being held there as traitors and Entr’i came to break us out. She told us that the dungeons of Taeum were originally created to hold her there when she rebelled against them.

[He should really keep focused on the subject at hand, but who is he kidding? He’s not even going to try to pretend not to have an opinion on this. Bitter anger slips into his voice and he doesn’t try to stop it.]

It’s easy to understand why she did. Taeum is full of nothing but the self-righteous stains of people who revel in their own greed and—

​​Wei Wuxian.

Anyway. The dungeon was created for her and that’s where she escaped from. The portal she used to escape back then is the same portal she used to get us out.

Entr’i tried to kill the Highest One. It’s why she was imprisoned. [ Gwen's voice, by contrast, is soft. She speaks without inflection. ] They used to be close. Entr’i and Angrial. She said Angrial wasn’t always like this.

[Wei Wuxian lets out a deep sigh] Also, Entr’i has the orb. It’s how she called the portal. Angrial showed up as we were leaving but Entr’i got us away before they could fight. Said something about meeting on Giva. I think that’s it. [There’s a short pause in which Gwen shakes her head no, she has nothing else to add, and then he continues] yeah. That’s everything. If anyone has questions, I can take them, but there’s not much more than what we said here.

[ There's a lot to process and probably a lot to say about this new information, like the fact they now have to somehow find a way to retrieve two orbs and stop a war. But all Peter cares about is: ]

Oh thank fuck, you two are okay! Where are you now? I can come to find you.

I left you like half a hundred messages, Gwen, you could have said something. You had me worried sick.

[ He's not even going to try and pretend that was not the case. ]

[There's a refreshing voice. Wei Wuxian lets out a tired sigh, glancing over at Gwen for a moment before responding himself. ]

We're...I'm not actually sure where. Somewhere in the military quarters. Are you alright? How have things been over here?

Damn it. I didn't join the military, so I don't have access to the barracks. But I can grab some food or anything you might need, and we could meet somewhere in the city proper? Unless Entr’i won't let you all leave her sight.

I'm okay, yeah. We've been managing, but it hasn't been easy. Lots of innocent people here who don't deserve this fate. Are you hurt? How come you got branded traitors?

[ There is a pause, as Peter expects Gwen to say something, anything. But that doesn't seem to be happening any time soon. When he speaks again, he sounds less frantic but also somewhat more distressed. ]

Is Gwen mad at me?

( Well there's some immediate relief. )

There's an orb in Taeum, too. A group of– ( idiots ) –a group of our own got themselves arrested trying to get to it by themselves. Currently we're trying to figure out how to get them free.

Gwen. ( like he's going public with any of this, yo. ) I heard a bit about what happened. I'm sorry I didn't get to either of you in time. You hanging in there?

she flinches away from peter's voice. (not his voice. peter wouldn't be so cruel.) she keeps her eyes fixed on the floor that she cannot see his grinning skull. her hands close around the edge of the mattress. ]

[ it's not a question. only one person knew where they were. only one person could have informed mccoy. ]

( McCoy clears his throat. )

We're not really on speaking terms at the moment. Can you tell me about where you are?

Arrested by Taeum? They managed to get there? [He frowns, remembering the dungeons they'd been kept in.] Our powers were blocked there. Without Entr'i I don't think there's a way out.

( Terse, clearly not thrilled by the situation: )

We gotta come up with somethin' quick, Angriel's talking about permanent solutions.

That explains how Entr'i knows about Taeum's army and what sort of strategy they plan to take. She's brought it up during a few of our strategy meetings.

You're part of the strategy team? [He pauses, considering his words.] What is Entr'i like here? How is she received by people?

[The questions don't serve any useful purpose, but he can't stop himself from asking. He wants to know if Entr'i is the kind of person he thinks she is.]

I am. That's what I've been working on here. And I've got plenty of experience in my own military, so it's proving useful for this mission.

[ This ... is a new person! So he adds, ] Major Yzak Jule, by the way.

Entr'i is rather liked by those who share her determination and thus joined the military for the same reason. This place is otherwise lawless, so those more interested in the chaos of Sedorum aren't bothering with anything like this.

She's passionate about the goal to enter Taeum, displeased with its pay to enter system. She's also more devoted to that cause than she is to "Him."

So that would explain why Entr'i is so eager to fight Taeum. And if she tried to kill this 'Highest One' then whatever they are... it's something that can be killed.

[Kill the Highest One. This world would be better for it, right? Entr'i seemed to think so at least but...

The thing about this—about all of this is that Wei Wuxian isn't invested in the way he should be. He knows it, knows he should be focused on finding the orbs and getting them back and doing everything they're supposed to do so they can return but—]

What happens to the worlds we visit after we collect their orbs? Are they better for it?

[Haha oh Yamato, there's a reason he didn't mention that at all in the message. Wei Wuxian is quiet for a long time, hands curling into fists at his sides and simmering rage threatening to rise to the surface for just a moment. Not now though. Not when he needs to look after Gwen.]

We were investigating and got caught. [Simple and true.]

We're both fine now. [Physically.] How about you? have you been doing alright? [It takes more effort than usual, but he forces relief into his voice, puts on a familiar mask of friendliness. It's harder today, but he's had so much practice.] It's good to hear a friendly voice.

How did Entr’i even know you guys were there?

I don't know. If she goes back and forth between the two places, maybe she heard there were new prisoners. [They weren't the only ones there, but...] People who'd been labeled traitors probably would have caught her attention. [An enemy of my enemy and all that.]

What are the chances she has people planted in Tauem? Is that possible? Could someone have told her?

From your account, it's sounding more and more that we're really dealing with two orbs. Like Dr. McCoy mentioned above, another group discovered that there's an orb in Taeum, too.

This might complicate things in terms of getting both orbs back to the station with us.

[ That is, if they even should. ]

You said she got you out. Where are you now? Are you somewhere safe?

Unless Entr'i is fooling everyone and is actually sharing an orb with Angrial, there have to be two. [The skepticism in his voice makes it clear he's positing that as an extremely unlikely case, himself already convinced there must be two. It's his first mission and from the sounds of it, there aren't supposed to be two, but it's what makes the most sense and doesn't seem that unlikely to him. Power always attracts power.

He snorts, moving on.]

She brought us to somewhere in the military barracks. We have a room and we're free to move around, so we're as safe as anyone else around.

It's to hear that you got out but are you okay? Where are you the both of you right now? [she will ask about the rest of the things mentioned but for now she just has a whole lot of questions and concerns about all of this]

We were caught investigating where we shouldn't have been. Guess they rightly assumed that we were spies. [They just weren't spying for Entr'i. He lets out a laugh that manages to pass for exasperated and feels his lips curl into a tired smile. Even without an audience, he's so used to playing the part.]

We're safe now, settling into the military barracks in Sedorum.

[ somehow, nie huaisang sounds just the same as when he was half-laughing at wei wuxian's attempts to befriend lan wangji in the cloud recesses. ]

[Huaisang's voice has him sighing with relief, not just in knowing his friend is alright, but also at the familiarity of it. With everything going on right now, Huaisang is a welcome stabilizer.]
