[ if someone told clarice she'd be reaching out to the rest of her cohort almost the instant she finds her footing on the station, she'd have laughed in their face. frankly, she would have preferred to keep her head down, stay out of the way until she was needed.

but some things were necessary, and dealing with a whole set of people whose backgrounds and experiences she had no clue about necessitated some information-gathering.

reaching out anonymously seemed like a good compromise. ]

it's a word that's followed me around my whole life
it means i'm different
i look different, i can do things "normal people" can't
and "normal people" don't like that

that’s a lot of people where i am from. scared, untrusting of anything and anyone different or better off.

i used to be pretty mad.

hard not to be when you’re sleeping in mud and wondering where your next meal is coming from, when you’ll be used as canon fodder to protect someone worth ten of you and that someone who can boil blood is eating a fat pheasant off a plate behind the walls of a gilded palace.

it didn’t seem fair after…

[ not when the heretic had been the one to throw their world into chaos, to create the fold that divides and kills so many.

but that’s one madman, one immortal fucking madman.

mal’s still mad, still suspicious of those who would align themselves with the darkling. but… ]

i used to be scared too.

but something changed how i saw some things.

[ of course she'd considered it, the moment she realized what she was experiencing was real. that different people from different worlds were all pulled in here together. when she was younger, she had once wondered what it would have been like, if the people who were labeled different in her world were the ones in charge. (it was a scary, dangerous thought, and one she quickly stopped herself from pursuing the moment she realized just how tempting the idea had been.)

this person, whoever they are, who thinks nothing of mutants and different, still suffers from such a world. where the ones with powers were the ones with the power. and, just as she suspected, it doesn't sound like it's faring any better than her own world has. ]

what changed?

[ and that's a loaded question. everything changed. the sun summoner was found and the world changed for it. ]

it got personal. couldn't afford to be scared anymore.

i figured out that even if there's a madman at the helm doesn't mean everyone's thinking the same way. the ones that do just fucking suck.

it's hard to think like that when the people in charge are so loud
and feel like they're everywhere

at least you were willing to think differently
not a lot of people can say that for themselves

they're in the tsar's ear, that's for sure.
