So we got space Zumbas or whatever you call 'em, [Roombas, they're Roombas,] an armory, a fake outdoors, a rock band, a music room, movie nights, strawberry ice cream, empty pizza boxes—shame on you all for not sparing a new guy some pizza, by the way, I could've used that—and an upcoming play. 'S'all great and all, love the variety here, but you know what I didn't find?

[A pause, for dramatic effect. Then, mock-disappointed:]

Any heavy metal records. I'm shocked, you guys. You're telling me nobody here listens to Iron Maiden? System of a Down? Metallica? Hell, at this point I'd even take Nine Inch Nails and they don't even count. Next supply drop I'll ask Viveca to pull a few records and my old jukebox in, get you guys a crash course in the best of the genre.

[With that out of the way, Dante switches subjects, the jokey disappointment now gone in favor of a slightly more serious but still casual tone:] By the way, anybody up for a spar? If we're gonna go on a mission soon, I'd like to stay sharp, see what I'll be working with. You want a fight, come find me in the training room. I'm the guy in red with the big-ass sword, can't miss me.

Got a couple Metallica and Zeppelin records. You gotta ask for 'em.

[ he can appreciate that, he takes care of his own gun in the same way he does his albums. ]

Okay. You can borrow them for a couple days, then.

[ HE'S TRUSTING YOU ]

[There is a hesitance in his voice as he responds. The strange magical devices ~~he really doesn't get technology ok~~ that allows words and images and voices from others is both familiar in that he's worked with spells that allow mind to mind communication and unknown in that he's never known a spell that could do so much more and with so many people at once.]

Metallica?

[The way Dante stressed that word, it sounded very important.]

Lan! Yeah, Metallica. You've never heard of them, they're a famous band in my world. Once I get my hands on some of their records I can play 'em for you.

[Dante's good and all, but he's not a professional, his renditions were never gonna be as good as the original.]

[Lan er-gongzi was more appropriate, but was this a fight worth having when not face to face? Probably not.]

How does one 'play' records?

[records aren't instruments. they're... they're written documents?]

...right. [Give him a second while he works out how to explain them.] Okay, so you write music down on a sheet of paper, right? But you still have to play it yourself. Well, a vinyl record is a special kinda record where you can actually record the music being played and not just the notes for playing it, but you need a device to make it work.

[A quiet huff.]

It's easier to show you than to explain, but I didn't exactly bring any of my records with me.

[His voice holds no small measure of curiosity - for him. So still placid, but with clear interest, as he asks:]

These 'records'... they are talismans that allow you to hear what has been written in the record?

[He's trying.]

Funny thing ya mention trainin' room, I'm about to head there.

[ Thanks for the warning about the sword tho, now he knows what to pick ]

Seem you found already there are plenty of fans of, ah, "rock classics" over here.

[You can practically hear the bright grin in his voice as he says:] Yeah? How will I know when you get there? Just so I don't accidentally scare some other poor soul walking through the door.

[A hum.] I noticed, yeah. Makes me feel a whole lot better, if you ask me, I wasn't sure anyone here would know what I was talking about. We come from all over, seems like.

[The voice on the other end sounds playfully hurt.]

I like some heavy metal as much as the next guy! Maybe you just ain't been lookin' at the right labels. Gore Cadaver? The Gates? Nomadic Goat? Please tell me you know 'bout Nomadic Goat.

[There might be a slight disconnect, here.]

[With the light note of someone who's decided to play along for kicks, see where this goes:] Yeah, I've heard about Nomadic Goat. You get their newest album yet, by any chance? I liked the two-minute guitar solo on the second track, really got the blood pumping.

[Clayton goes along with it, earnestly and enthusiastically.]

You bet! Don't remember 'em doin' long solos like that, but last album they released was, ah...damn, fifteen years ago? My memory might be a lil' fuzzy on the details. Wish I still had my old CDs.

Ain't never heard of the folks you mentioned, though. You into more of the underground scene?

Fifteen years ago? Wow, you're in luck, they just released a new album two days before I got here.

[A huff that sounds kind of like a teasing laugh.] You must be real underground. System of a Down's a little bit newer, but Metallica and Iron Maiden have been around since forever. If I had any records I'd play them for you.

[There's a long pause. Then a low chuckle - the sound of Clayton catching on to Dante's teasing.]

No kiddin'--must've been a real feat to get 'em all in the studio again, seein' as the lead singer and guitarist both been dead for years.

I just tend to go to the sim room and hit up one of the karaoke programs for a good time with the right music. Or I could program you a disco club if you prefer old school.

[The smirk is audible in the voice. Also maybe the implied old man at the end of the last sentence.]

A disco club, huh? I just might take you up on that offer one of these days, show you how we old-school folks get down. You young'uns should really take notes from your elders, we've been dancing since before you could even crawl.

[He's not that old, he's in his early forties.]

I've been to the sim room, but that was to get familiar with how the missions went. Haven't really figured out how to program it for anything else yet.

It's not too hard; I can show you how, Old Man.

But I don't think you'll be able to show me up on the dance floor. Skill trumps experience in this case.

[A chuckle.] Yeah, thanks, kiddo, [and he gives the word a special teasing emphasis,] I appreciate the help.

Cute you think I haven't picked up more skill than you just by dint of experience.

[He's grinning even if it can't be seen; it can be heard.] No problem. It's the responsibility of the young to take care of the old, ya know. Just doin' my part.

I've just always been good at everything.

[Nope, no humbleness here at all. Just straight up matter-of-fact about it, too.]

Is Metallica even old enough to be played on a Jukebox?

Yeah, of course they are. Technically anything's old enough to be played on a jukebox, you just need vinyl records, and those are still being made.

You got something against jukeboxes?

[ It's both a blessing and a shame Eddie isn't here, he would probably be over the moon to find someone else who apparently appreciates heavy metal as much as he does. ]

Not regularly, no. [ But, because he feels like Metallica was almost kind of responsible for Steve surviving the Creel house. ] But I'd be willing to give metal a shot. [ It feels like the least he could do.

The talk of sparring, though, that fills Steve with maybe a bit of dread. ] Might have to sit out on the sparring, though. [ It's okay, Steve, you'll learn how to fight properly...eventually. ]

Then I got a few recommendations for you. Metallica's a good one, but if you don't regularly listen to metal in general then it's easier to get yourself used to similar genres first. Like, say, [give him a moment to think, it's been a while since he had to do this,] the Runaways, AC/DC, Blue Oyster Cult. Probably Volbeat too, although they're a little newer.

For actual metal, try Judas Priest, or Scorpions. Then Metallica or Black Sabbath or, hell, even Megadeth and Cannibal Corpse.

[A hum.] If you're sure. Offer's still on the table, though, and I'll even go easy on you, if that's what you're worried about.

Wish I could say I heard of any of them, but I guess now's a good time as any to start listening. [ At least some of the names sound vaguely familiar, maybe Eddie's mentioned them. He's pretty sure he remembers Megadeth being a patch on Eddie's vest, and he's mentioned Black Sabbath. ] But thanks, I'll check some of 'em out.

And it's not really -- I mean, I've lost fights before. More than I've won them. I'm not really trained or anything, you know?
