Video | welcome, hallo, buenos días, ohayō, etc, etc! | UN: Newt

[Newt comes shuffling into view on the screen, holding a cup of coffee in his hand with a bag of what seems to be Sour Patch Kids harrowingly hanging out from beneath the pinky finger of the very same hand. Disheveled but more than happy to provide his services after dragging himself out of bed, he taps his knuckle on the chalkboard beside him — one that used to be Hermann Gottlieb's, may he rest in peace (in a not dead way — may he rest in peace on a beach or something while wholly alive and thriving).]

Noticed an influx of new and kinda-new faces over the last few days or weeks or whatever.

So here's my handy dandy welcome board! Recently updated, to keep with the times.

Read it over and get a feel for how this place goes; I'm gonna finish off this coffee before I take any questions.

[As he takes the world's most obnoxious-sounding sip and burns his tongue, here's the board in question:]

[And then, after a bit of time, he turns the board over to the other side:]

[No worries, current crew, if you can't get one of those introduction papers in person!

Because he's attached them in file format, too.]

I finally finished that book while we were in the Ndeira complex! I enjoyed it very much. Soseki-san only just published it, so I never found the opportunity to read it until then.

I've met the man himself a handful of times. He's
[be nice be nice be nice] an interesting character.

[Huh.]

You’ve met Soseki Natsume?

[personal profile] softshoes 2023-07-02 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. I encouraged him to give a lecture at my university, and afterwards, we spoke together about our time abroad for a newspaper article.

Naruhodo-san is better acquainted with the man on a personal level, though.

[Never mind him glossing over the three criminal trials...]

[Well that's one way of putting it...]

Ah. Interesting. So you're from the early 20th century.

I am indeed.

[But by now he's very used to all the timeline nonsense.]

I suppose it's safe to assume you're from further than that?

Over a century. 2020.

[It's not as shocking as Bones' number, but it's a year that's still staggeringly far away, if he thinks about it too hard.]

In a way, it's reassuring to hear life will go on, even all those years later.

Were you afraid that it wouldn't?

[personal profile] softshoes 2023-07-05 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Not really. But with every age's conflicts, sometimes, one cannot help but wonder.

Is it too dangerous to ask what 2020 is like?

[personal profile] dispassioned 2023-07-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Understandable. The 20th century had some big ones.

Dangerous in what way?

[personal profile] softshoes 2023-07-05 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
[YUP, too dangerous.]

That way! Don't tell me what those "big ones" are, I'd rather find that out on my own.

Are you worried you’ll alter the course of history somehow? You wouldn’t remember once you’re back.
softshoes: (👞 27)

[personal profile] softshoes 2023-07-08 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
No, not quite. As you said, I won't remember anything once I've returned to my own time. It's more like... I don't want it to affect how I live my life here. The orbs keep my mind occupied enough.

[...]

You should, however, tell me about the medical advances I've missed. I hear you're joining us at last, Doctor.

Honestly, it's continuously uplifting to hear that his novels have that much of a lasting impact, even into your time. The last time I saw him, he'd only just decided to write his own books.

They're a regular part of the curriculum in schools. His cultural significance is remarkable.

You have no idea how much it gladdens me to hear that. Considering what a wretched time he had in London, he was well due a turnaround in fortune.

[Though Susato HAD hinted he'd kind of gone and gotten a big head after his first novel was published... Ryunosuke hasn't had to deal with him though, so he can go on telling himself it can't actually be THAT bad.]
