[ you're welcome, she struggles to respond. it feels disingenuous, somehow, to sound so innocuous in her intentions. like she isn't hawk-eyed and anticipating an inevitable threat upon herself, no matter how charitable her offer.

perhaps some piece of her simply wants to keep him within eyesight, so that she might see any blade before it's sharpened and aimed at her — or mal's — back.
