Video | welcome, hallo, buenos días, ohayō, etc, etc! | UN: Newt

[Newt comes shuffling into view on the screen, holding a cup of coffee in his hand with a bag of what seems to be Sour Patch Kids harrowingly hanging out from beneath the pinky finger of the very same hand. Disheveled but more than happy to provide his services after dragging himself out of bed, he taps his knuckle on the chalkboard beside him — one that used to be Hermann Gottlieb's, may he rest in peace (in a not dead way — may he rest in peace on a beach or something while wholly alive and thriving).]

Noticed an influx of new and kinda-new faces over the last few days or weeks or whatever.

So here's my handy dandy welcome board! Recently updated, to keep with the times.

Read it over and get a feel for how this place goes; I'm gonna finish off this coffee before I take any questions.

[As he takes the world's most obnoxious-sounding sip and burns his tongue, here's the board in question:]

[And then, after a bit of time, he turns the board over to the other side:]

[No worries, current crew, if you can't get one of those introduction papers in person!

Because he's attached them in file format, too.]

That's kind of a depressing way to look at things, isn't it?
It isn't possible to be close with people you've only just met, true, but getting to know each other like this can help build that feeling.

[Nevermind that Vash skipped over all the questions that required any vulnerability, but listen. You can genuinely care about people and be closed off at the same time ok. Not necessarily healthy but entirely possible!]

No shit, it's depressing. That doesn't make it less true.

And I notice you didn't deny it. Sometimes it's easier this way.

I’m saying it’s a matter of perspective.
You can look at it as “fake” because you couldn’t have had the opportunity to care about the birthday of someone you don’t know, but you could also look at it as a chance to meet people whose birthdays you’ll care about as you get to know them.

Would you believe me if I said I would care about your birthday if you told me, even though we’ve only spoken a few times?

Sure, I believe you'd care.

[A fact which touches close to a nerve, considering her own parents hadn't. Worse than not caring, they'd used it as an opportunity to remind her that no one else cared either.

That she was a freak.]

In case you hadn't noticed, you're not normal.

Ahaha, I'd say you're not wrong, but I think in this case that's giving me a bit too much credit!

[What was that, suddenly he can't read.]

I think you'd find the others would care too, if you gave them a chance.

I've given enough people chances! You know how many of them have cared? Three. And that's if you count Alec, and he's Swamp Thing!
rootlessly: (pic#16358952)

[personal profile] rootlessly 2023-07-06 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure what it means to be Swamp Thing, but that's still three people who wouldn't have cared if you hadn't given them a chance, right?
greenpower: (pic#16358793)

[personal profile] greenpower 2023-07-06 05:43 am (UTC)(link)
He's a Swamp Thing. Trust me, it makes sense if you see it.

[Which is beside the point.]

What makes you think I gave any of them a chance?
rootlessly: (pic#16364498)

[personal profile] rootlessly 2023-07-06 06:08 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you'd said you'd given enough people chances, and it sounded like you meant three of those people cared.

But if you didn't give them a chance and they cared anyway, isn't that all the more reason to try? More people might surprise you like that.
greenpower: (pic#16358752)

[personal profile] greenpower 2023-07-06 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The people who actually cared, cared whether or not I gave them a chance. They were just good people regardless.

Good people aren't that common is what I'm telling you.

[personal profile] rootlessly 2023-07-06 05:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think you can distill people down to just good or bad.
Life's too complicated for that.

[personal profile] greenpower 2023-07-06 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
How about this? Most people are ASSHOLES.
rootlessly: (pic#16363793)

[personal profile] rootlessly 2023-07-07 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
[...you've got him there, Ivy.]

Ahaha, I wouldn't say most, but I suppose that's a matter of opinion.

People can be assholes and still care, though.

[Ask him about certain priests he may have gotten to know.]

[personal profile] greenpower 2023-07-07 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
...

Okay.

I'll give you that. Sometimes people are assholes but not, like, assholes.

[personal profile] rootlessly 2023-07-08 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha exactly. They don't usually want you to know they're not the second kind, either.

I meet a lot of people while traveling, is all.
You get to noticing patterns, after enough time.

[Though he definitely is thinking of One In Particular at this moment.]

[personal profile] greenpower 2023-07-09 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, that might make your optimism even worse. You'd think you'd learn by now.

But as long as you don't go trying to fit me in your patterns, you might as well do you.

[personal profile] rootlessly 2023-08-01 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
You'd be surprised

[Humans can certainly be cruel and selfish and apathetic, but there's more to them than that. Most importantly: they can change.

As for Ivy herself, he chooses wisely not to point out she's already fit into some of them, and leaves it at that. She's really not so difficult to understand as she might think, but he'll let it be. For now, at least.]
