[let's talk about all that orb barrier stuff] - text (un: major.yzak.jule)
Before the location of our last mission is pinpointed, maybe we should have a discussion about what Viveca mentioned regarding the barrier holding up.
Namely, alternatives to every one of us giving up our reason for coming here. She did say to start thinking about it.
The commander's powers notwithstanding, plenty of us on this team undoubtedly possess abilities that could be offered in support. And there are plenty of people beyond us on this station who are aware of our mission and the gravity of what we're dealing with.
We've always been pretty good at coming up with solutions and contingency plans.
(( dated to after yulevibes! and consider this an open floor to tag each other to discuss ideas in prep for the voting post on the 20thalso since my ass got work ))

And... Yeah, he can see why Yzak would be particularly worked up about this latest news, after having his fears provoked to such a degree.]
We're not going to let that happen.
[He says it with all the confidence and determination he'd muster for any of his clients in court.]
I don't see a clear path there as of yet, but like you said: we're a team, and a strong one. We'll figure something out.
[He's kind of just repeating things that Yzak has already voiced himself, but maybe it will help to hear them echoed back to him from someone else.]

His voice calms a bit. ]
And I'm perfectly willing to carve out a path myself, if it comes down to it.
After all of this time, all of this work, after everything else I've had to go through here ... I'm not just giving this up and losing it, too.

[The name just sort of slips out. They're not in Amaryllis Grove anymore, but two months of playing husbands has more or less worn down Ryunosuke's more formal tendencies when addressing him.
Plus... He's also not sure what else to say. It's such admirable resolve on display here, and it's a relief to hear Yzak calmed down somewhat, too. But he'd also be lying if he said there wasn't some small part of him that was still worried. Something about Yzak's the fixation on his goal, the sense that he has so much riding on this...
...He really needs to stop drawing comparisons between Yzak and Kazuma, when he's fairly certain he's just being paranoid. He fishes about for something else to say, steering away from the topic of obsession, and the many ways it can corrupt.]
You know... Times such as this, like when I've hit a block in an investigation... I'll usually take a step back and look at all the evidence gathered so far. I wonder if it might help to do something similar here: review the basics of what we know about the orbs, and how they function. Taking a wider view might reveal some possibility we've overlooked.

[ Step back, look at everything. Facts, theories, experiences, even the gaps in places. Answers could hide within, and if not, then perhaps hints, guides in the right directions, ideas. He, too, has learned to look for such things now that he has more responsibility at home, after missing so much for so long... Even the smallest thing could sprout something able to grow into something useful. ]
And, we can do that concurrently with discussing ideas amongst each other.
There was something I wanted to ask the two of them, [ Viv and Degar. ] to see if it was possible at all.

[He's already starting to percolate on an idea of his own, but let's hear the good Major's thoughts first.]

I've had it for two years and have worked constantly to hone and perfect it to the best of my ability. It's come in handy countless times on our missions. And on the subject of what happened last year, I was able to provide what energy I could of it to aid in keeping the barrier strong.
I simply wonder if there's a way to ... give it up. Or give it away, to put what I'm wondering more accurately. In some way so the full sum of that strength can be put toward something here.
I won't be needing the magic once I return home, after all.

[Seriously though, how in the hell did he miss that? Kazuma was studying Charter Magic with her as well. Largely prompted by Ryunosuke getting mauled and nearly mcfucking dying right out the gate on their first mission.
He falls quiet a moment, focused on a fleeting thought...]
...Give it away...
...AH!
[The yelling probably isn't necessary. Oops.]
no subject
[ He starts. ]
Huh!? What is it?
no subject
Ugh. Maybe it's a bit of a stretch, but... What if we could strike deals with the orbs by directly offering up things like your magic, in order to convince them to stay in place? Or something along those lines...? Do you think that could work, if we gathered enough people willing to offer...?
no subject
It's certainly a tactic to consider.
There have been times where an orb has wanted power in order to agree to return with us, and I remember it feeling ... draining. Almost as if it would have moved on to drain our very life force once it sucked out all of the magic. Insatiable. Bottomless.
The Orb when it's whole, though ... I wonder.
Truly I wonder if there's some way to destroy it. One would think it's going to use a lot of its power to hold up its end of the deal to so many of us. If the barrier can hold until it's spent that great deal of it and remain contained...
no subject
I don't know... Not that I wouldn't like to see the threat removed, but isn't destruction of an orb exactly what we were trying to avoid with Cirawei?
You've told me at numerous points that the orbs are bound to keep their word once a deal has been struck. It could be a means of binding them, couldn't it?
no subject
[ Even then, they thrived by attaching to what sustained them. ]
Striking a deal, though, will come with a price. If someone wishes to take that upon them, they'd not only have to be prepared for that, but a deal iron-clad enough to not be misinterpreted or loopholed would have to be carefully crafted.
no subject
But as far as prices are concerned, that's what I'm suggesting. Prices like your charter magic, or... Miss Berman offered something else on this past mission to convince the Orb to leave Amaryllis Grove alone, didn't she?
[...]
Granted that may not be the best example... Considering it found a loophole in her offer...
[God he hates those little bastards.]
no subject
[ And however the fuck that works and can be yielded and used, u know. ]
no subject
[...]
Those of us have garnered any extra power, anyway...
[SPEAKING OF REGRETS. HE'S HAVING SOME.]
no subject
You've garnered at least some energy. Or was what I helped with the extent of it?
no subject
[Yes, he really makes an anime boy damage taking noise into the network. And then when he speaks again, his voice is wavering and faint with embarrassment.]
W-well... No, it's just... I'm realizing how much more I could have saved up if I'd only realized earlier on... Instead of. Assuming that I didn't need to... Because I had no intention of undoing my own regret...
[He's counting back in his head.]
I could have had the favor of at least three other orbs to leverage... But instead, I've only been complying with the damn things since Ankata...
no subject
Well, plenty of those tasks they throw out at us are pretty bullshit...
But regardless, it's still a good idea to put out there.
no subject
Y-yeah. Even if I don't personally have much to offer... There must be other people in the crew who have since changed their minds, who may have extra power to spare.

After our next mission, [as in, he wants to not think anymore about how they're going to deal with the orb containment problem,] or after our final mission?
[...As in, not thinking about what it's going to be like to go home.]
no subject
no subject
[He hesitates, feeling an undeniable sadness welling up in his heart which spills over into his next words.]
...Has to do more with saying goodbye.
no subject
[ There's a pause. Because ever since the announcement that they were near their mission's end, it's clearly been on everybody's minds, and Yzak isn't excluded from that. And for him, it's just been an extra weight on an already long-heavy heart as he looks to the finish line and beyond it. ]
I've admittedly been a little more focused on ensuring myself and those still aiming to undo their regrets haven't wasted all of our hard work and time here.
[ ... ] But, if those goodbyes are accompanied with the accomplishment of what we've fought so hard for ... it will surely make them a little easier, knowing that our friends are returning to something better.
no subject
Mmm.
[And Ryunosuke can't argue with that.
...Maybe "right now" isn't the best time for asking this next thing, but. If not now, then when?]
...I know you're trying to undo something very serious, but, regrets and goals all aside for a moment... Are there people you're looking forward to seeing, once you're back?
