Alright, let's not be total wallflowers at prom here, if we're going to be stuck together for the foreseeable future, I think it's only right that we (read: I) start getting to know all of my fellow space cadets. If we're ACTUALLY in space and this isn't some humongous simulation. You guys saw how easy it was for this place to manufacture a hyper-realistic simulation earlier, right? Yikes, big yikes.
But if we ARE in space and we're going to be traveling around, that's actually kind of AWESOME.
No offense to anyone who didn't want to actually be here of course, but you're nuts if you're not a LITTLE curious about the vast expanse of outer space. C'mon. OUTER SPACE! How incredible is that? And here I thought me coming face to face with aliens back home was INCREDIBLE, now we've got ACTUAL OUTER SPACE??? Pinch me I'm in a simulation. LOL.
Sorry I'm rambling, my name's Newt. Dr. Newton Geiszler, but but that sounds so much more boring and overcomplicated than 'Newt', so just stick with that. Worked as a xenobiologist on earth (is there multiple earths or what??? a lot of you are crazy unfamiliar with Kaiju, which is wild to me), helped giant robots fight aliens, the usual. Likes are rock music, playing instruments, tattoos, science and tech, dislikes are bossy pushovers who complain about those things.
Speaking of which, my really good pal from home's name is Hermann Gottlieb, and you should call him Herm to make him REALLY feel at home. :)
It's nice to meet you guys on the NEWTwork. ;P
... Actually—
[Suddenly, the text turns into audio, in which a higher voice with some focal fry bleeds in-]
—can I just abruptly switch to an audio function?
[A pause, and then an excitable:]
Holy shit, how awesome is that?! This is amazing; we've made some pretty monumental gains in technology back home, but we're still working on finessing the finer aspects of neuralogically connecting to networks like these for the general population. I'd love to take one of these apart sometime and see what makes them tick. Good to have an idea of what to expect, in case we need modifications or repairs done at any point.
Anyway. Uh. Hey!
... This whole voices-in-your-head thing can't be good for my train of thought, but geronimo, right?
[If anyone listens beyond that, they may catch the accidental thought-to-audio that follows:]
Wha — oh, dammit.
I sure hope this is the last nosebleed, because I would rather not worry about having accidental brain damage from drifting with aliens.

text;
If you're an AI, are you implying you live in the running system of this ship like the other AI? Sorry if I'm coming across as skeptical. I'm just 1000% skeptical. You know, that kind of feeling just happens when you wake up in a weird station after weird voices want you to collect magic orbs. I'm still trying to get over the hurdle that is MAGICAL ORBS.

No, I have a body like everyone else. I used to live as a program in a computer, but getting taken to this place changed that. Don't ask me how they did it, I've tried for my entire life to escape to the real world and they did it like it was nothing.
I understand you're skeptical though, so if ever you want proof I'll hack the simulation room to do whatever helps prove my word. The stuff I was able to do as a program I can still do when I'm in it.
no subject
Sorry it's hard to control my thoughts, I need to work on the question counts!
How the hell does anyone stop their brains from sending before they can stop it?
Stop it, me.

When I was a program, I lived in a sort of simulated world? Think like a video game. On the surface, it looks like the real thing. But if you take a closer look, you quickly realize it's a poor imitation of reality. There's only so much food the developer will bother to code into the game. What about the taste? The clothes? The diversity? Little details like that pile up and before long, it becomes obvious nothing is real.
Well, the video game analogy is easy so I'll go with it. And it's pretty relevant besides, ahaha! I was a NPC there, except I'd been programmed to be aware of it all. Unless it was a bug that gave me consciousness... I'm not totally sure. My creator never talked to me. I think he avoided it. But well, sometimes things felt normal, as if I was human. Of course, it was a pretty empty and hollow life. And by keeping the video game analogy— At any given time, the player could reset the game. Or fast forward. Or worse, turn off the game.
So like I could be in the middle of writing a poem, and suddenly I found myself back in a classroom. I could be doing an important task and suddenly the entire thing was turned off. Regular NPCs wouldn't notice a thing but for me it was pretty... Well, that's not an experience I'd wish on anyone, ahaha!
I'm really enjoying how it feels now, though. It's like up until now someone was playing with me and now I'm free. I'd felt pain before, but now it's like the sensations are more varied, more diverse. And it's getting a little used to, not having things skip all the time. Sometimes after I'm done talking to someone, I expect things to fast forward or reset.
Oh man, I've been rambling, huh? I guess we have that in common, ahaha!

In that case, your life before sounds like a total nightmare.
[Okay, Newt, you can do this, you can not totally ruin a conversation by being tone deaf (wait, has he already gone and done that? someone give him an instruction manual-).]
You never have to apologize to a guy like me for rambling, trust me. It's only when your rambling is boring that I file formal complaints, and you have absolutely 0 boringness going on here. Sounds like you're pretty freaking AWESOME though. Like, 10/10 cool person. I would've gone bonkers if I were stuck in a videogame!! You must've been stuck with just a few kinds of music, though, right? Like on loop or something. Which sucks and needs to be remedied ASAP!

[ Nightmare... Is putting is very kindly. But she doesn't really want to elaborate anyway. The kind of horror and suffering she'd gone through were very... Abstract. How could she explain the horrible digital void she'd been trapped in whenever the game was turned off? "Hell" was the closest term she could think of, and it barely started describing. ]
Ahaha, thank you very much! I really want to make the most of that chance I got. I often dreamed of existing in your reality, the real world I mean. Well, that's not how I imagined things to go if it ever happened, ahaha. But a chance is a chance.
To be honest, I think I did kinda go crazy at a point. But yes, the music was like, the worst. I mean I kinda liked it, but gosh? Especially since the composer had inserted the leitmotif in nearly every track. I tried composing my own music... But it was like very limited. Do you have recommendations in music?
no subject
I've got LOADS of recommendations! If I could just find a charger for my phone, I could show you a ton of great tunes. Personally, I love punk music most of all, but... uh. It's an acquired taste. I've learned that. I still have some great songs on there that might fit your fancy!!!
What sorts of things do you look for, in music? Themes? Styles?
no subject
I'd say I'm mostly looking for music that makes me feel something. That makes me feel like I'm transported in another world. Kind of like a book, I guess, ahaha!
[ As for the matter of the phone... She ponders a bit. She's not sure, but— ]
Ah, actually I may have a way to charge your phone. We could use the simulation room. As I said earlier, I have some way to influence it so I may be able to code something compatible with your phone. That would only be a temporary projection of course, but it'd still be made of energy— Which is exactly what your phone needs. At this point it's just a matter of regulating the energy's output so it'd recharge your phone without overloading it.
I'm not sure if it'd work, but it may be worth a try.
no subject
You've just become my new favorite person!!
Let's absolutely try this out! I'm so excited to see how it reacts with a physical phone!
I mean I'll cry if it gets fried but it's TOTALLY WORTH THE RISK
OH, OH, CAN YOU MAKE IT SOUND LIKE A CONCERT IN THE SIMULATION???
Can you play the music on SURROUND SOUND from my phone??????
[moNIKA whatT HAVE YOU d o NE]
no subject
Ahaha, well if you're free now, I can go meet you at the simulation room and try. No promise though! While in theory it should work, my ability to manipulate the code isn't as good here as it was in my own simulated reality.
no subject
But I can meet you there, yeah!!! Right now??

[ If Newt does come to the simulation room, he will find something that looks like... An 80s cafe? Monika didn't choose, it's totally random. Speaking of which, she is there. Between the stupidly long hair and pseudo-Japanese high school uniform, she stands out quite a bit amongst the people simulated by the room. She's about as far removed from the 80s aesthetic as possible.
That and she's staring into nothing very intently. As if lost in thought, maybe? But she also looks very focused, and for good reason. There is something that looks like a mass of big and colorful pixels in her right hand. And after a few seconds, it solidifies into a charger. Immediately she loses her focus and brings the charger to eye level. ]
Gosh, I didn't miss doing that one bit...
no subject
Monika, right? I'm Newt! What're you up to over here?
[Spoken like a teacher grading a science presentation at one of those science fairs, with genuine need to hear this all explained aloud.]
no subject
[ She smiles sweetly at him. Seeing how she is 5'3", that means there is at least one person in this space station that will always be shorter than him. Perhaps that's a small comfort? ]
I was putting code together to make this. [She hands the charger over to him.] I'm not very good at messing with stuff... And it's harder here than it was back home. So I looked for fitting lines of codes here and there and basically recycled them, ahaha!
[ Oh right, he can't see what it is she is doing. She raises a finger and something akin to a paper-thin and transparent grey screen appears next to Monika. It has lines of codes that would probably meant nothing to him, except for the mention of "energy regulation." ]
It's ready for use, no need to find a socket. I'll be monitoring the energy levels, so it should be safe for you to charge it.
no subject
He carefully collects the charger, still just as alarmed by how real it feels as the first time he'd been in this simulation room.]
That's so cool. Okay — here goes nothing!
[With bated breath, we wait until the phone turns on...!
When it does, the lock screen illustration appears-]
no subject
She looks very focused as he takes the charger and tries it on— Of course, she needs to be careful and regulate the energy levels, but... ]
Yay, it works!
[ And if it works for his phone, then it probably works for whatever piece of technology anyone else got that needs recharging. ]
It may take a little bit for the battery to be full, but that's our energy problems solved I think.
[ Goodbye, everyone's eardrums. ]
no subject
Awesome! Monika, you're the best. Hell yeah...! [He looks around, a bit more bright-eyed now that his phone has fully returned to him (their generation, man, you know how it is; they love their phones).] Heeey, you think you could play this over the cafe speakers? I mean, coming from a phone is cool, too, but that'd really be a nice ambience.
