'Sup, ship mates. You've gotten the low-down from Newt already, Dusty's managing food and Grandpa Barnes is still passin' the buck as always . . . I figured I drop in my stuff too. A while back, I had a few people ask about self-defense classes and training.

And I figured that's useful 'cuz the last mission definitely went hairy and people got hurt. I'm happy to offer up some tranin', sparring or hell, even weapon maintenance or setting you up with some basic gear.

I got the qualifications. Did a stint in MIT, but also did a couple of active war tours 'round Afghanistan and Iraq, was a Navy Seal. Trained in a couple of martial arts disciplines. Ain't too shabby with swords and shields along with guns.

You're welcome to hit me up and we can start training. Skill's the best asset you got and you never know, even with superpowers or magic and whatever, to have an extra edge.

If that ain't your thing, I'll hook you up with some basic flash bombs. No fuss.

Well, if you would like any assistance helping them train against magic, I'd be willing to assist. [A pause.] Though not all of it seems to work properly in the station.

[ he blinks, surprised. ]

Not workin'? How come?

I'm not sure. I noticed it when the power ran out and I was not able to teleport. There wasn't a problem in Gyeongje, so I assume something related to the station or space is interfering with some of my spells.

[scarcastically]

[ . . . weird. and off-putting actually. ]

You think they put power caps on us so that we can't overpower 'em?

[chronosynthesis]

... That is a possibility, I suppose, though if it were I would have expected a lot less of my spells to still work. [Which one of them is overconfident in this situation.]

[ erik's mind is racing ahead, filing this all away. he's always had his suspicions about this place and he feels this is a step up in terms of proof. ]

And there's no pattern?

It seems to be a specific subset of my magic. Ones that work by briefly modifying the actual reality of space or time around it. Or me. I don't seem to have an issue with the magic itself or illusions.

[scarcastically]

[ . . . huh. ]

That's pretty damn specific. And maybe a little tellin'.

[In an actual fight, losing some of those spells would throw a wrench in his efficiency. But he fairly confident he could get around it if necessary.]

If they can block specific spells, I wonder why they would not just block it all.

Probably 'cuz they have more to fear from those spells than the rest.
