'Sup, ship mates. You've gotten the low-down from Newt already, Dusty's managing food and Grandpa Barnes is still passin' the buck as always . . . I figured I drop in my stuff too. A while back, I had a few people ask about self-defense classes and training.

And I figured that's useful 'cuz the last mission definitely went hairy and people got hurt. I'm happy to offer up some tranin', sparring or hell, even weapon maintenance or setting you up with some basic gear.

I got the qualifications. Did a stint in MIT, but also did a couple of active war tours 'round Afghanistan and Iraq, was a Navy Seal. Trained in a couple of martial arts disciplines. Ain't too shabby with swords and shields along with guns.

You're welcome to hit me up and we can start training. Skill's the best asset you got and you never know, even with superpowers or magic and whatever, to have an extra edge.

( ... dammit, maybe he needs to reframe things more in a less archaic, but entirely correct for the last seven years, mode of asking? he has a feeling there's that potential that him saying "i'll trouble you" might be taken as either a literalism or something other than the politeness attempting at being humble for having knowingly asked someone else for a favour.

( Qingqiu's not too long in arriving himself, wearing casual clothing a la some middling era of modern, his hair pulled half back into a top knot with a metal worked piece with a pin through it, the rest of it hanging free down his shoulders and back. Pretty incongruous in its own way, but not the worst, given how probably it is some of the other cultivators dress here.

He holds his hands up, closing one into a fist that rests against the flat of his opposing hand. )

[ erik takes it in stride. he's been exposed to various cultures and he makes it a point to study and understand them. he doesn't offer a bow himself but a flick of a nod as he picks up a pistol. ]

The name's Erik. We're gonna be usin' one of these.

( the pistol has shen qingqiu's attention, as the name for what it is aside from "gun" fails to load. he's never seen a gun in person before, and given where the technology was in his world, he doubted he would even if he had lived.

that said, if there's another one, he'll move to pick it up, careful with it and not looking down the barrel. in fact trying to figure out if it has a safety, and shortly realising: what the hell does a safety look like anyway? )

This is .45 caliber pistol. Also known as a compact handgun. The safety on the side here, like a switch.

[ erik gestures to each part of the pistol, carefully and slowly. he doesn't rush and he doesn't talk to qingqiu like he's an idiot. he also dismantles the gun and puts it together in under a minute, with practiced movements. ]

The most important thing is checking the safety and being prepared for the kickback. I recommend using both hands first. One below the gun to keep your aim steady.

( he nods his head, but frankly, he wants to see that twice more, because this man's so assured in what he's doing it's absolutely fascinating in its own terrible right. terrible, knowing the harm guns cause, but it's still a far off, not truly real sense at the moment. it's not like he's lived with them leveled at him before; no, just other dangerous, life-taking potentials.

how much does getting shot hurt? may he not need to find out. )

Kickback?

( he flicks the safety off, then on again. leaves it on as he holds the gun in one hand, aimed away from both of them, and cups his other around the bottom. is his elbow supposed to be locked? at least he doesn't do something like turn the gun sideways! )

Is this sighted like a bow?

A bit like it, yeah. Just lower.

[ erik adjusts qingqiu's stance, adjusting his shoulders and arms. ]

When I say kickback, I mean it'll feel like a recoil. Your body will feel itself revolt against it. Your ears will ring.

( he doesn't offer resistance to being adjusted, simply takes it as direction like it's meant, and tries to keep part of his brain from going WHAT THE HELL YOU'RE HOLDING A GUN?! and shooting it.

hahahaha--oh. )

( his eyes flick to the safety: on. then forward, to his target. )

Safety off, then pull on the lever, expect the recoil, and the loudness.

( spoilers: he won't be prepared for the loudness, but as soon as he has the word to take the shot, he will be surprisingly steady. recoil simply absorbed, arm and hand unmoving and unflinching. less on purpose, more on training he has as a cultivator, holding still in the face of all sorts of pressing violence. )

[ erik merely watches with an observing eye. no judgement, no praise. he's a tough taskmaster in general, though he'll never be cruel about it. there's no sense in belittling someone's lack of knowledge unless it's deliberately hidden in ignorance. and erik knows the difference. ]
