[It isn't difficult to miss the gaps in his knowledge, or Jake's guilt and his slowly eroding joy at sharing about his family. It sends a pang of empathy through Wei Wuxian, but even if it hadn't, his answer still would have been the same.]

Families are difficult, but it's easy to hear how much you love your children. They all sound wonderful. [And he means it too. Whatever difficulties Jake's family might face, it's obvious to Wei Wuxian that his children have two parents who love them. That isn't something to be taken lightly.]

How did you and their mother meet? [It's a casual subject change that he hopes will be less taxing on his new friend.]

[ Being seen like this isn't really Jake's favorite thing in the world. Especially not with a relative stranger. But at least he'd picked a stranger who was kind; the redirecting question is a worthwhile bridge to less turbulent waters, and Jake happily takes it. ]

Lady? she's amazing, man. i've known her since finn was like, man... eight or something? but we only started seeing each other once he was a little older, after we started working for the princess of a kingdom a few miles over from where we live.

Lady and the princess are close, y'see. not that she's stuck up or anything. we both play the same instrument, so we hit it off quick.

[The question takes him by surprise, but only a little. They've been talking about Jake's personal life for long enough after all, it's only natural he might have some questions in return. There isn't much hesitation before his answer, though his heart aches at that someone waiting for you. He did leave someone behind after all, but that isn't something he's going to speak about to someone he's only just met.

[ It's a neat deflection, albeit one that Jake could and would counter with me, dude, weren't you listening? But Wei Wuxian is right; the conversation is new, their first real one in fact, and there were some things you just don't poke at twice.

that's stringed, right? Like an erhu? They aren't native to my land, but I've heard of them since arriving on the Ximila. I'd love to hear you play sometime, there aren't nearly as many musicians aboard as one might hope! And I don't play anything grand, only a very humble dizi.

i guess we're going to need to hear each other play, because i'm not sure i recognize those, either. but you've got the string part right. finn plays too, a flute. i'm not sure how much he's brought it out yet, though.

clearly we gotta get all these musical minds in one room together, get a real jam session cooking!

My dizi is a bamboo flute. I had the joy of playing with Finn once, not very long ago. [It wasn't exactly joyful at the time given the context, but it had helped lighten the burden they'd both been carrying then so he looks back on it with fondness now.]

Have you met Degar yet? No jam session is complete without him!

[ The exchange of names, instruments, and various extra bits of musical information is a pleasant segue for both of them. It occupies a similarly pleasant amount of time, until Finn's insistent sleepiness require Jake bid Wei Wuxian goodnight with a quick photo of Finn in his pajamas, looking exhausted and annoyed.

For this poor boy's sake, Degar and Viveca really should've never let these two on the same crew. He was really in it now. ]
